New media platforms have many advantages today. The new generation is born into an era where they can follow both traditional media and digital media. In this way, an environment has been created where the new generation can choose its side by making comparisons and new media platforms did not have much difficulty to be accepted by the new generation. In the type of media that we call traditional media (television, radio, newspaper, etc.), communication is one-way and generally it does not take the opinions of the audience into account. For the first time in media environments, which we call new media, users were also allowed to have a finger in the pie, and new media environments are developed in way that gives a place to the opinions of the users. Users are thus more connected to these platforms. We can give the best example of these platforms on Facebook. Facebook is a social networking platform that aims people to communicate and exchange information with each other. I will try to tell the foundation story of Facebook using the movie “The Social Network”.In October 2003, Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University, is abandoned by his girlfriend Erica Albright. Unable to get over this separation, Zuckerberg wrote a humiliating article about Albright in his blog, LiveJournal after returning home. He then enters the database of Harvard University and download photos of all female students and writes a campus website program called Facemash to make boys evaluate these girls according to their beauty. Due to the heavy traffic coming to Harvard’s computer network, some of Harvard’s databases collapse and Zuckerberg is sentenced to suspension. The popularity of Facemash attracts top class Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and their co-worker’s attention and they offer jobs to Zuckerberg. The Winklevoss brothers hire Zuckerberg for their projects, which they call Harvard Connection for Harvard students only as a geek-programmer. This idea expands Zuckerberg’s horizons and he launches his project, The Facebook. Initially, The Facebook was a closed website where only Harvard students could communicate with their friends and register with their school emails. Soon after, The Facebook gained great popularity from users and Mark Zuckerberg also increased his popularity by adding many schools to the site. Word of mouth increases the popularity of Zuckerberg in time and The Facebook also attracts the attention of Sean Parker, the founder of Napster. Later, Parker meets Zuckerberg and the site’s funder Eduardo Saverin. He recommends The Facebook to be only “Facebook”, so he can participate in this adventure and find various investors and help generate big revenues from Facebook. In the movie, we are seeing the transition to the digital age. As Parker excitedly said in the film, “We lived in villages and cities, we will live in digital now.” Facebook was created by Zuckerberg’s inspiration from many places, combining all his ideas on a common platform. Based on the first Facemash application created by Mark, I guess he added the concept of “like” to his site. While watching the movie, we see that success is not a coincidence and how hard Mark is working day and night. In the movie, it is explained very well from the beginning of the movie that Mark’s goal is not to make money. After going through various difficulties and litigation processes Mark never gave up. Facebook is now one of the most visited social media platform and it has most active users in the world. Also, Zuckerberg acquired applications such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger to be the only leader of social media platforms. Zuckerberg thus won the youngest billionaire title in the world. Currently, there are projects such as making a living space by combining Facebook with VR technology among Zuckerberg’s plans. In this adventure since then, Zuckerberg has accomplished his success and it seems it will continue to do so.
