Technology is the technical advancement of science. People develop technology to facilitate and improve their lives using science. Technology is used in almost every field today. Especially technology has a positive effect on science, industry, education, transportation, trade, and communication. Almost all of the vehicles we use today are advanced versions of vehicles used in the past. Technology determines the development and prosperity of a country. For this reason, technology has led to competition among countries for hundreds of years. Technology is of great importance for countries, both for military and economic reasons.
First of all, technology is of great importance for countries in terms of military and economics. During the First World War, technology was not very developed, but when the Second World War began, countries knew already the importance of technological developments. Countries believed that those with the best technology would win the war. In this period, most of the countries invested heavily in technology and science. The technologies produced during World War II were far beyond the era and therefore enabled the technology to take the biggest steps. The first computers, rockets, atomic bombs always appeared during this period. The basic knowledge that will bring us to today’s computers and the great change that the computer has brought in the world has also been gained in this period. During World War II, the Germans had a large part of Europe because they had a highly developed intelligence network. The state secrets, war plans and military missions they sent to the strategic regions were encrypted with Enigma. Enigma is a password(?) machine used by Nazi Germany during the 2nd World War to encrypt and decrypt secret messages. Every country that fought against the Nazis considered that it was impossible to decode Enigma. In fact, it was normal to see thousands of messages to be decoded with a human mind impossible. But the British made progress at the time, thanks to a group of mathematicians they gathered secretly in Bletchley Park. They unraveled the German inter-unit cipher network. Perhaps this war, which could have lasted for many more years was reduced to 2 years and perhaps millions of deaths were prevented. The most striking names among this group of mathematicians are Alan Turing and Thomas Flowers. Alan Turing invented a machine named “Christopher”, believing that Enigma could not be solved with a human mind, that he could only be solved with a machine.
Christopher was the name of Turing’s favorite person and thus identified him with his machine. Alan Turing was thus considered the founder of computer science. The algorithms he developed to decipher German ciphers formed the idea base of the modern computer. In addition, Flowers is the inventor of Colossus, the world’s first digital computer.
Although technology is being developed to make people’s lives easier and more enjoyable today, people have made such great inventions to win the war with limited possibilities or to survive. They have achieved this success by working for long hours. The machine that Alan Turing built with the algorithms developed at that time was the pioneer of computers today. Turing, by laying the foundations of the computer, has now become a pioneer in the technology that has entered our pocket (mobile phones). Alan Turing created the foundation of artificial intelligence by questioning whether the machines could think even at that time. Alan Turing, also revealed the game of finding the human in his article titled “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”, based on the answers given by the machine and the human that we call the Turing test today.
